Globally, edelweiss (
Leontopodium Alpinum) is renowned for its association with the European Alps, particularly in Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. Thriving in high-altitude, rocky terrains, this flower has been celebrated in folklore and songs, symbolizing rugged beauty and the adventurous spirit of mountaineers. Its star-shaped, white-furred petals have made it an emblem of alpine heritage. Historically, gifting an edelweiss flower was seen as a promise of dedication, given the challenging terrain required to obtain it.
Indonesia is fortunate to host its own species of edelweiss, known as Anaphalis Javanica. This "
bunga abadi" flourishes in several mountainous regions across the archipelago. Notable locations include the Surya Kencana meadow on
Mount Gede, the slopes of
Mount Pangrango, and the expansive fields on
Mount Rinjani. Additionally, it thrives in the highlands of
Mount Semeru,
Mount Merbabu, and Mount Papandayan. These highland areas provide the ideal conditions for this perennial plant to thrive.
