A Biodiversity Haven in the Last Peat Swamp Forest in Sumatra

Nestled at an elevation of 100 to 200 meters above sea level, Zamrud National Park is a biodiversity hotspot and a crucial natural defense for the surrounding regions. Surrounded by vast peat swamp forests, the park serves as the sole water source for the area, forming a massive basin that collects and stores water at depths ranging from one to three meters. This unique hydrological system makes Zamrud a vital ecological sanctuary, regulating water flow and maintaining the balance of its delicate wetland ecosystem.

Named Zamrud ("Emerald") for its lush green landscapes, the park is rich in swamp forests like Bengku, Rengas, and Pisang-Banana, providing a habitat for Sumatran tigers, sun bears, arowanas, and Belida fish. A birdwatcher's paradise, it hosts 38 bird species, including 12 protected species like hornbills and herons, thriving in its untouched wilderness.

One of Zamrud National Park's most captivating features is its twin interior lakes, Big Island Lake and Beruk Lake, which enhance the park's serene beauty. Within Big Island Lake, four smaller lakes, Pulau Besar, Pulau Tengah, Pulau Bungsu, and Pulau Hanyut, add to its mystique. Pulau Hanyut (Drift Island) is particularly fascinating, as its name suggests, it is believed to move freely over time, shifting with natural water currents. Additionally, the park is home to a bat sanctuary, where large colonies of fruit bats find refuge, further enriching its unique ecosystem. Whether exploring its floating lakes, dense forests, or thriving wildlife, Zamrud National Park offers an unforgettable glimpse into Sumatra's wild and unspoiled nature.

Unique Features

  • The park is home to Lake Zamrud and Lake Pulau Besar, which support a rich peat swamp and freshwater ecosystem, critical for flood control and biodiversity conservation.
  • Zamrud National Park shelters endangered species like the Sumatran tiger, Malayan tapir, sun bear, and estuarine crocodile, as well as rare birds such as the woolly-necked stork and the storm's stork.
  • The park's vast peat swamp forests act as a major carbon storage site, helping regulate global climate change while supporting diverse plant and animal life.
  • Home to over 150 bird species, Zamrud National Park is a prime destination for birdwatching, featuring hornbills, storks, kingfishers, and eagles.
